STUDENT SPONSORSHIP

PROGRAM | GUIDELINE | DISTRIBUTION

The Khmer Institute has formulated the following guideline to ensure the effective implementation of this program:

(a) Financial Need Identification : To receive financial assistance, students must demonstrate financial need and must be enrolled and in good standing at a university or similar tertiary-level school in Cambodia. Because income tax statements are not available in Cambodia, the KI takes into account a totality of factors to identify students as needy. These factors include but are not limited to:

  • student residence - poor students from the countryside usually cannot afford their own housing and live at the temples or with relatives in the poor neighborhoods of town
  • mode of transportation - poor students usually walk or ride an old bicycle to school
  • employment - poor students are usually employed at jobs that pay an average of less than $100/month, such as gate-keepers, security guards or housekeepers

(b) Student Application : Students must fill out an application form and submit a personal statement.

(c) Publicity of Program : Publicity for the program has been through word-of-mouth. The success of this form of publicity is demonstrated by the fact that over 150 students applied in its first year of implementation (2000) representing over 10 different majors and over 10 different provinces of origin. The student applicants study at various institutions of higher learning in and around Phnom Penh.

(d) Students Who Qualify for Assistance : Every student who meets the requirements set forth in (a) and (b) will receive assistance in the form of financial or material support hereinafter termed "gifts" (money given to the students or products the KI will procure and distribute to aid them in their studies, such as notebooks and pens).

(e) Gift Disbursement : Gifts will be disbursed to students at the beginning of each semester by either a KI representative or officers of our affiliate organization in Cambodia (The Khmer Youth League for Democracy Development). Students who have applied for sponsorship but are no longer enrolled or in good standing at the university will not be awarded gifts.

(g) Confirmation of Gift Reception : To ensure students receive the gifts allocated to them, the KI representative and/or affiliate organization officer will be required to have students sign statements which confirm their receipt of the gifts.
