Although most of the respondents do not smoke or gamble and only drink moderately, if at all, the majority of both female and male respondents expressed non-judgmental feelings toward Khmer women who drink, smoke, and gamble. Ten female and five male respondents selected (d) (They are just freely expressing themselves) and four female and one male respondent selected (b) (There is nothing harmful about their behavior). One female and three male respondents believe Khmer women who drink, smoke, and gamble "are the main reason our cultural values are declining." Three female and two male respondents consider them a "disgrace to the Khmer community." Write-in answers by female respondents included: "It is harmful because they are harming themselves and in that they can unintentionally harm others. They are not a disgrace to the Khmer community. It's just that they add to the stereotypes." and "I look down on people who just sit around and gamble, smoke, or drink their money away. I don't think they are a disgrace to the community, but they do help perpetuate stereotypes on Khmer people." The one male respondents who wrote in his answer simply wrote: "Yuck!"

6. Why is it okay for men to engage in these activities?

Answers given by female respondents:

not ok (12)

double standard (3)

ok in moderation

male ego

societal acceptance

Answers given by male respondents:

not ok (6)

part of culture (2)

societal acceptance

machismo

Ironically, although a majority of the answers to the question concerning Khmer women who drink, smoke, and gamble were non-judgmental, in an open-ended question concerning men who engage in these same activities, a majority of the respondents of both genders replied that it is "not okay." Twelve female and six male respondents wrote in that they did not consider it "okay" for men to engage in these activities. Other answers for explaining why it is "okay for men to engage in these activities" pointed to male ego/machismo, double standard, cultural norms, and societal acceptance.
