| A huge structure, Baphuon
is yet another Khmer temple meant to represent
Mount Meru, home to the Hindu gods (the Indian equivalent of the
Greek Mount
Olympus). This home to the gods has not stood the test of time,
however, and over the centuries has collapsed due to the decay of wooden
beams that were designed to help support its massive frame. Reconstruction of the Baphuon ceased in 1972 due to the
Cambodian civil war, but is once again underway. |
