|
| Angkor Wat
("Temple City") is currently the largest religious monument
in the world. Although originally constructed in dedication to the Hindu god Vishnu,
it gradually transformed into a Buddhist sanctuary as Buddhism took
hold in Cambodia. On its massive infrastructure may be found over 1500 apsaras
(celestial dancers) and on its corridor walls are carved intricately
detailed bas reliefs
measuring 2 metres from top to bottom and extending for
approximately 1.2 km. The image of Angkor Wat has graced every
Cambodian national flag since independence from French imperialism
in the 1950s, including the current
flag. |
